ABOUT THE FOREST OF DEAN FOREST
OF DEAN -
Nestling between the Wye Valley, the Vale of Leadon and the Severn Valley,
the Royal Forest of Dean is one of England’s few remaining ancient
forests, covering 27,000 acres of woodland. LYDNEY
- The thriving town of Lydney covers approximately eight square miles,
and stands on the north bank of the UK's longest river, the Severn. There
is also evidence that the surrounding area has been farmed since the
Bronze Age. MITCHELDEAN
- Mitcheldean (10 miles east of Gloucester), on the eastern edge of
the Forest of Dean was called Dean until the 13th century, afterwards
it was generally known as Mitchel Dean or Great Dean to distinguish
it from the other "Deans" (Mitchell is from the Old English
word "Mickle" = Great, and Dean or Dene = Vale, especially
a deep, narrow, wooded valley). NEWENT
- Newent is the largest town in northwest Gloucestershire and situated
north of the capital, Gloucester and surrounded by local towns of Ledbury,
Dymock, and Ross-on-Wye. Providing the town with excellent communication
links, perhaps accounting for the vast numbers of residents and businesses
locating here both past and present. |
